Anna Elizabeth Diemer family tree

Elbert (or Albert) Dirks Diemer

Anna Elizabeth Dieme was 4th generation South African on her father's side, and great grand daughter of Elbert (or Albert) Dirks Diemer, one of the first settlers in the Cape. Elbert Diemer was a soldier and originally Jan van Riebeeck's waiter (tafeldienaar). Diemer probably arrived in 1657 in the Cape. Between 1657 and 1662 he was a tailor and later taverner. In 1662 he received permission to start a shop, and later in 1675 a butchery.

Elbert Diemer owned the farm Bergvliet (just east of Constantia) and was married to Christina Does, the daughter of Velten Does and Jannetje Boddys from Doesburg. They had 8 children: 5 boys, 3 girls. Their sixth child, Abraham, was Anna Elizabeth Diemer's grandfather.

In a transaction dated 1671.01.27 Albert Dircx Diemer set free the 5 and a half year old slave Sijlbilla, daughter of Abraham from Guinea and Catharina (slave of Diemer).

Abraham Diemer

Abraham Diemer was born about 1669. He married Anna Elisabeth Schneewind (also spelt Sneewind) on 1697.04.07. They had 2 boys and 4 girls. The eldest boy (the fourth child) was Elbert, born about 1704.

Elbert Diemer

Elbert married Johanna Roveen of Amsterdam on 1728.10.03. They had three children: 2 boys (Abraham and Johannes) and 1 girl (Anna Eliasbeth). This Anna was baptised on 1734.11.28 and married Johannes Steyn on 1760.06.01.

Note

De Villiers and Pama give her surname as Ten Diemen and state that her origin is uncertain. However, her surname is clearly Diemer, as shown in her and Johannes' wills of 1761.05.20 (CJ261, no12) and 1761.05.29 (MOOC 7/1/34). In the entry of the surname Diemer in De Villiers and Pama, her name indeed appears and it is also stated that Diemer was married to Johannes Steyn.
