Arend Moelich was born in Germany. During unrest or war his parents fled to Holland when he was a baby. They lived at 10 Marx Street in Rotterdam. Age 17, Arend arrived in 1859 at the Cape and was a teacher at Kandelaarsrivier (Oudtshoorn).
Arend's son Gerrit Johannes Moelich moved to Bonnievale. When Arend Moelich retired from teaching he lived at on of his son's farms (Van der Merwe) in Bonnievale. Arend was an energetic gardener and brought many small trees in containers from Oudsthoorn. These he planted and in the 1980s they were still bearing fruit.
Hester Joubert (Gerrit's daughter) lived in the house.
